Bride: Susann Hurney (now Weir), Bank Official
Groom: Barry Weir, Self Employed
Length of engagement: 18 months
Wedding date: 18th November 2011
Wedding photographer: Julie Cummins Photography
Susann and Barry wanted a unique wedding day that reflected their personalities and what they were like as a couple.
"We wanted to do things our way. We wanted to throw tradition out the window and make our own rules," said Susann. And that they did, with an elegant, girlie-girl wedding on a beautiful November's day!
Along with their purple, pink and white wedding colour scheme, they also had the traditional 'Something Old, Something New' as their wedding theme that can be seen in Susann's lace gown, headpiece, borrowed vintage earrings and in the Church and reception decor.
We met... Barry and I met when I was 17 and he was 18 (10 years ago). It was actually outside my school, I was sitting on the green with my friends. Barry was at my school with his friend Rob, who I knew. Rob called me over and Barry and I started talking. The following day, my friend told me that Barry had asked for my phone number, at the same time Rob told Barry I wanted him to text me. I guess they were playing match makers! I played hard to get for a few months and then we decided to meet up and go out for a few drinks. The rest, as they say, is history and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
First impressions of Barry... I thought he was gorgeous, very confident and sure of himself. He made me very nervous, but in a good way.
Barry’s first impressions of you... I saw her sitting with a group of friends, she just stood out, she was beautiful and shy but natural and I knew I had to have her.
Our proposal... We got engaged at the top of the Rockefeller Centre in New York just as the sunset on New Year’s Eve in 2009. We spent the day going to see the usual tourist attractions and at about 3pm Barry kept saying we should head over to Rockefeller Centre, I thought it was a bit strange that he was so interested in seeing it because he’s not great with heights. So, we made our way to the top and arrived just as the sun was starting to set. Barry looked petrified, I thought it was because of the height but he said “no” and took my hand. He looked into my eyes and asked me to marry him. I was shocked and I actually started to laugh (nerves obviously) and I managed to get out a “yes”!
My something old, something new... For my something old I used Barry’s great aunt’s wedding coin. My something new was my garter. My something borrowed were my mams vintage diamond earrings and my something blue were blue diamante “I DO” stickers for the bottom of my shoes.
My dress... I fell in love with my dress and knew it was the one from the minute I tried it on. It was a fully lace dress designed by Enzoani, with a belt around the waist, delicate lace straps and a sweetheart neckline. It was fitted as far as the top of my thigh and then kicked out at the end with a lace train. I was so comfortable all day, it was exactly what I wanted.
Our ceremony... We had our ceremony in St Patrick’s Church in Celbridge, our local church. Fr Brian McKettrick married us and made our ceremony so personal and unique. The Church is beautiful, we had spiral bay trees outside, lanterns up the aisle and lavender love hearts adorning the pews. I was actually right on time, I couldn’t wait to get there and marry Barry. I was not at all nervous but my dad was so nervous standing outside the church, I was the one reassuring him! I will always remember walking up the aisle, I never even noticed the guests, all I saw was Barry at the top and I wanted to get up there to be with him.
Our favourite wedding picture... I have so many, Julie our photographer did an amazing job. But my favourite wedding picture is the one where Barry and I are looking at each other when we’re sitting at the alter. We didn’t even know the photographer was there and we were laughing our hearts out at Fr Brian’s sermon. It’s a really lovely natural moment and it captures the happiness of the day.
Love this image with the golfer in the background!
Our favourite part of the wedding... It’s so hard to say because we had such a magical day and every part was special, but if I had to pick one, I would say it was when Fr Brian announced us as ‘husband and wife’, I was so proud and I don’t think I stopped smiling all day.
We chose our venue because… We chose to have our reception in Carton House in Maynooth to celebrate with our family and friends. The grounds of Carton are fabulous and we knew they would make gorgeous photos. We also wanted a venue that combined the old and the new and Carton has both. The staff at Carton really couldn’t have done any more for us, during the planning process and on the day itself.
Our wedding theme/ colours... Our theme was the old and the new! My dress and headpiece were a modern shape but with a bit of a vintage feel. I’m a real girlie-girl and I chose a deep purple, pink and white as the colours for the theme. I had my bridesmaids in purple including my dog Misha, who had her own purple dress for the morning before I left for the church. I had purple and pink flowers, cupcakes, centrepieces, chair covers and pink champagne for the toast drink.
Our inspiration for our wedding theme/ colours... We wanted to do things our way. We wanted to throw tradition out the window and make our own rules. I found most of my inspiration on the internet from Irish and American blogs. I loved going through photos of other peoples weddings to get a feel for their personalities through the little things they added to their day. I also collected a huge amount of wedding magazines and when I found something I liked in one, I cut it out and put in into a folder. I had a section for dresses, hair styles, jewellery, room decoration, photo ideas, flowers and one for Barry’s things. I loved every second of planning our wedding.
Our bridesmaids/ groomsmen... I had three bridesmaids and a junior bridesmaid. My maid-of-honour was Katie Rearden: my bestfriend Roisin Ni Leathlobhair; my friend Sarah Durnin and my Godchild, Sarah Carrigan. Barry had his brother Scott Weir as his bestman and his other two brothers Jeff and Dean as his groomsmen.
Our first dance... We chose Everything by Michael Buble.
Advice for other brides... My advice would be to start early and get as much as possible out of the way because you may think you have loads of time but it creeps up on you and there are always things that have to be left until the last minute. You don’t want to be running around getting stressed out too close to the wedding. I would also say if possible take the week before the wedding off work to totally relax and just really enjoy the run up to the day. It goes by so fast and you can never get that time back.

Pig on a Spit: Pigspit.ie - We decided to have a pig on a spit for the afters food. I thought it was unusual and sounded yummy! It was served at 11:30 that night and I think people liked having the hot food on a cool night after a few drinks.
