Bad Brides: The Top 10 Things to Avoid Doing on your Wedding Day!

A list of 10 things a bride should really avoid doing on her wedding day.

While we’ve only ever heard or read about them, but apparently ‘bridezillas’ do exist and they come in all shapes and sizes. It is understood that weddings can be stressful and while you obviously want everything to run smoothly, your wedding day is also supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life! So take a raincheck on the tantrums, don’t run away with the best man and for heaven’s sake definitely don’t slag-off your new family during the speeches! If you are considering any of the following 10 points, take a step back, grab a deep breath, and try to remove yourself quickly from a possible 'bridezilla' situation.

1. Not showing up

You may look like Julia Roberts, but don’t act like her too (ha, we couldn't help ourselves!). If you’re having second thoughts about saying ‘I do’ then sort it out before the big day instead of doing a very unfashionable runner. What's more, it's going to be very hard to shake off a title like 'The Runaway Bride’.

2. Unasking a Bridesmaid

Firing a bridesmaid because she’s started to pack on the pounds, she’s turning a tad bit grey or she’s just announced that she’ll be six months pregnant on your wedding day is unacceptable, and pretty crazy. Although according to a poll on WeddingsOnline.ie; 46% of newly wed brides would choose a different bridesmaid than they had for their wedding, we strongly urge brides to think long and hard about who they ask to be their right-hand woman because ‘unasking’ a bridesmaid can be a very upsetting situation for all involved and can put a real damper on the day (especially if the former-bridesmaid will still be attending the wedding - awkward!) There are several exceptions to this rule however, including if your BM is bad-mouthing you, your wedding situation changes or if she’s showing a complete lack of interest in anything you say and do!

3. Being late

“....Get me to the church on time!” - we couldn’t agree more. Every bride likes to be fashionably late but turning up over half an hour late can look diva-like and may really annoy your guests. You only get one wedding day, so make every minute count by spending it with your other half! The exception to the rule: If your wedding car broke down or if you have a dress malfunction - everybody has heard the story about the bride who put her leg through her wedding dress and had to wait for it to be sewn back up again.

4. Throwing tantrums

Don’t become the bride who threw major strops on her wedding day. Don't be the bride who made the flower girl cry because she didn’t spread the flower petals evenly enough at her feet or the bride who roared at their bridal party because it started to rain. You might have a certain vision for your wedding but others (including Mother Nature!) will have different ideas. Take a deep breath and enjoy yourself.

5. Not inviting some of your OH’s family

You mightn’t like them and they could have terrible table manners but if you’re inviting your side of the family then they should also be invited. Don’t make your OH feel isolated, it’s their big day too!

6. Complaining about wedding gifts

Many of your guests may not be able to afford crystal, silver or china, so don’t expect high-end TVs, cameras and expensive holidays for your wedding presents. For some couples it’s enough that the guests shared in their big day.

7. Running off with the Best Man

We think this one is self-explanatory. The exception to the rule: If the groom runs off with the maid of honour - then why not?! Haha...

8. Slagging your guest’s attire

You're a bride, not the queen of the universe, so you can’t control what other people wear. If they don’t match with your theme, what are you going to do, ask them to leave? The exception to the rule: If someone is wearing a full-length, white ball gown that looks similar to your own.

9. Drinking too much

By all means enjoy yourself and let loose, but remember that age old adage - Everything in Moderation!

10. Leaving the wedding too early

It’s your day, you paid for it and everyone is there to see you. Stay and enjoy every last second! The exception to the rule: You’re going on your honeymoon the night of your wedding.
