They say that the least likely place to meet someone special
is in a nightclub. Well that’s exactly where I met Alan,
in CP’s in Galway. He insulted my choice of college,
I ignored him and we’ve been together ever since! December
2002 we went to Australia on holiday and while we were there,
Alan surprised me, by going down on one knee at the top of
the Sky Tower in Sydney. It was the last day of our holiday
and believe me, it was a lovely surprise. Alan tells everyone
that the first thing I said after “Yes” was “Can
we get a ring now?”. This is not true. I said, “Will
we get a ring now”! It only took my 30 minutes to pick
my ring. Although I always thought I wanted a solitaire, when
I tried them on, they didn’t look right. When I tried
on my ring (a trilogy ring), I knew that was it. I knew it’s
the one I wanted to wear for the rest of my life just as I
knew Alan was the man I wanted to be with for the rest of
my life. We celebrated later that night at a friend’s
house with champagne and Burger King! Very classy!
And so the planning began. I think somewhere in the back
of my mind I have been dreaming of a big wedding my whole
life. I was one of those teenagers who wore black, died my
hair orange, and swore off men, but the white dress must have
been floating in the background all the time because I have
taken to this like a duck to water! We have now been engaged
almost a year and I started planning, well, a year ago!
Our date is set for 4 June 2005, which is getting a lot closer.
I went to see the priest almost immediately. I knew I wanted
to get married in a small church near home. It’s not
my parish church but my parents were married there, as was
my sister so there is a great family link to it. We were also
viewing hotels around this time. We knew we wanted the Saturday
of a bank holiday weekend and with that much time before us
it was just a matter of picking a hotel. We settled on The
Abbey in Roscommon. The second I walked through the door I
knew I wanted my wedding there. The atmosphere, the gardens,
everything about it spoke to me. We didn’t spend long
deciding, but I’m like that, if I want something, I
go for it! I wanted to bring my mother to see it so we headed
down the following weekend, the manger showed us the bridal
suite, and it was fantastic. Alan and I hadn’t seen
it the week before as there was a wedding party using it.
It’s like something I could imagine in Cinderella’s
castle. I could definitely see myself there!
That was back in February, a lot more has gone on since that.
I can’t believe a year has flown by so quickly, it only
seems like yesterday I was sitting on the plane home for Oz
admiring my ring, which I did the whole 30 hour flight home!
