As a man, I would hate to be asked by the missus...Never underestimate the male ego.
Also, most men (not all) are not ready for marriage after only 2 years so it's a risky proposal that could scare him off altogether

I was going out with my husband to be for about 2 years when I brought up the marriage thing. He said he wasnt ready for it, which I respected and therefore left it. However about a year and a half after that he suggested moving in together. For me (I know others have different views), I didnt want to live together with us potentially having different views on where we would end up, so I asked him if he would marry me and he said yes. I didnt feel desperate, in fact quite the opposite as I wasnt 'waiting' on the man to ask me. Got married last Dec and am very happy.
