Does hotel assemble cake?

Postby cora11 » Tue Dec 28, 2021 12:52 am

Hi Girls

My aunt is making our 3 tier cake and h2b and Idelivering it to hotel day before. We have no idea how to stack a cake and we were wondering if we provided pillers etc would the hotel stack it for us or is that beyond their duties!!! Thanks x

Maybe call your hotel and ask them is your best bet. Most hotels have cake stands etc. but if your using pillars Id guess its really your duty to stack it. :wv

we used our hotels 3 tier cake stand and my Mum had to put the layers on the stand (she made our cake)

What way would you like it to look on the day?

Do you want it stacked one on top of the other without a gap in between tiers, this will require dowels in the cake although if it is heavy fruit cake and not more than 3 tiers it will more than likely hold the weight no problem without the dowels. In this case the tiers would usually be on thin boards same size as cake so no boards showing between tiers, if there are small gaps or uneveness around bottom of tiers cover it with ribbon.

If you want it with pillars there will be a gap between tiers, more traditional and maybe old fashioned look, but fine if that is what you want. In this case the boards should be the thick ones and bigger than the cake. Again if it is fruit it will probably hold the weight but the pillars are likely to sink down a bit in icing which may not look too good depending on the decoration. Would be inclined to put dowels into cake and up to top of pillars to hold weight better, can be easily got in M&S.

Finally, simpler solution, use the hotels S shaped stand if it has one, most likely they will have some stand suitable for unsupported cakes.

I think generally if you are getting it from a cake supplier the supplier delivers the cake and sets it up in the hotel. You could speak to your hotel and ask if they could set it up for you I'm sure they will! While they should have a cake stand in the hotel (make sure to ask out cake supplier told us that if you don't ask the hotel to keep if for you they can sometimes have it on loan to other hotels!!), they might not have the accessories to stack the cake. Might be easier to have separate tiers to save you bother of having to source everything you need for stacking!

I greatly doubt that the hotel would be assembling a cake made by somebody else. Being a cake maker myself I would never decorate other people's cakes. Neither I would trust anyone to assemble and set up MY cakes. Probably you should just get a tiered cake stand (or rent one) so that no assembling would be required.

ElenaH lots of hotels set up cakes themselves once it is a standard cake, many hotels request that the cake be delivered the day before (personally I prefer to deliver and set up myself but it's not always possible) so that it is there and ready when they are setting up the room in the morning.

Loads of people buy M&S cakes, and as a lot of people now have aunts/mothers baking the cakes these too are all set up by the hotel. Wedding cakes are very seldom baked by the hotel the wedding is in, so they have to have some knowledge of how to set up a cake, especially with the majority being simple ones that can go on a stand.

As a cake maker myself and having worked in a hotel for many years I have seen both sides of this, we often set up the cakes in the hotel and while I set up the majority of my cakes myself on the day, the hotel are perfectly capable of setting up a simple cake.
