DepressionRe: Depression
Just wanted to make 2 points on this subject:
Firstly excercise does not cure depression in most people, I walk between 5-7 miles per day, now it does help me, but it's not a cure Secondly, what annoys me is when 'celebs' announce they are suffering from depression, go into a clinic for a couple of weeks and then come out and announce they are fine now thanks, all cured. Most recently Catherine Zeta Jones, I'm not saying she didn't/isn't suffering from depression, all I know is, it makes me think 'how come she got cured in a couple of weeks and I've had it all my life and it never ever leaves me, it comes and goes of course, but it's always there', it just makes me feel like a bit of a failure that I can't 'cure it' (even though I know this isn't the case). Re: Depression
Just wondering does anyone have any experience with severe depression? I'm on 225 mg Effexor and 200mg lamictal and tbh I'm in a bad way. I've gotten my referral for hospital in Dublin but its getting to the stage I can't see any way out. Ds and dh deserve better and I've just had enough trying to fight the good fight when it's never going to work.

Sorry to hear you're so ill SC. I know you have a baby and husband but you are no good to them the way you are. I would strongly advise taking the referral, for everyones sake. Nobody wants to be in a hospital but you'll be in safe hands, these people know what they are doing. Please don't give up. You poor, poor thing. I'd say sit down with your family and DH and discuss it. Most importantly, take care of yourself. PM me if you need anything ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Re: Depression
Youre right tcm I am no good to them like this, problem is its been months now and no matter what I try I'm not getting better. Which is why the belief that they'd be better off without me is getting ever stronger

Don't say that please!! They would certainly not be better off without you. Your son needs his mum!! And your husband needs his wife, I can assure you of this. I have been there and bought the t shirt. I know you say you've tried everything and you're not getting any better, but you haven't tried hospital yet. Seriously, please give it a go. They will give you the proper care you need to get you back on track and in a mindset to be able to recover. These people are professionals, they know what they are doing!!
I know you think you can't go on, and happiness seems impossible, but I swear to you it's not. I know you've had a rough day on here too but don't let comments on an internet site upset you even more. Please please PLEASE take care of yourself.

Re: Depression
Hiya chick2012, sorry to hear you're not well. I personally went on medication first and then counselling. Don't worry if you think your doctor will just throw a prescription for anti depressants at you, you do have a say on it. Make it clear that you'd prefer to try counselling first. I'd hope the GP would respect your wishes. Good Luck with your appointment, hope you're feeling better soon. ![]()
Re: Depression
thanks tcm i remember speaking 2u on the unemployment thread.. how are u getting on?I will chat him tomoro, he is a great gp so in fairness i think he will recommend what is best....sorry im rambling! How did u find the antidepressants tcm? Some ppl have said to me they block out al feelings even happy ones and that youre just numb...?
Re: Depression
Still unemployed unfortunately. Had an interview yesterday, but it's only for relief work
![]() Anti depressants were very hit and miss. I tried loads of different types and I've settled on Cymbalta now. Found them the most help, in that I can actually be happy. I look forward to things and go out and enjoy it now, as opposed to dreading going out or avoiding it. I see a psychologist now once a week as well which I'm finding really good. But I've had to come a long way to get here, including a 3 week stint in hospital last May! Hopefully you will be sorted shortly and it doesn't rumble on for you. How are you keeping? How are things job-wise for you? Being unemployed certainly does not help my mood but I'm doing well at the moment.
Re: Depression
Unemployed still tcm but im volunteering in my line of work so i see it as working for my social welfare if that mkes sense..that must have been so hard on you being in hospital..im gad youre feeling well at the minute.. i will let you know how the doc visit goes tomorrow

Re: Depression
I hope it goes well chick, if you don't want medication make sure you get a referral for a decent counsellor, you may have to try a few of them but once they're not cowboys.
I like your idea of the volunteer work, I used volunteer in a charity shop (not the same as working in the desired field) but it felt good to do a little bit of good url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

Thnks Sandyclaws, i thnk the volunteer work just makes me feel worthwhile ifkwim.. how are you feeling today? I will defo get a good referral, how much is a counsellor or psychologist.. must look to see if vhi will cover anything towards it.
Re: Depression
I know my Quinn policy covers 50% (it also covers 100 days in a private hospital) so hopefully you have similar cover, but there can be low cost options for counselling too.
I'm not great today, I gave in and took a tamezapan last night to try sleep but I was awake til 3.30 still crying and mind racing.I ended up watching swan lake ballet on tv (I didn't actually "get" the story they were trying to tell through the ballet but the music was relaxing). I have a community nurse who calls each week so at least someone keeps an eye on me (one of the benefits of going into "the system" of the mental health services) url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

Were on vhi one plus plan.. doesnt say anything about counselling but it has the 100days you were talking about.. ive heard tht about music too but for me it didnt work at all! I find im getting so anxious about having to go to town, bank ,tesco anywhere at all.. in case i meeet someone i dont want to talk to!!Never used to feel like that.. would you think about getting back into the voluntary work sandyclaws?
Re: Depression
I'm thinking about restudying a couple of leaving cert subjects to keep my mind occupied, don't feel ready for the general public/small talk though. I'm the same with anxiety over leaving the house. The furthest I've gone in the last few days is the postbox but I've to do shopping today and I'd rather pull my teeth out.
Do u volunteer many hours a week? url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]
