Couch 2 5k

Re: Couch 2 5k

Hi Girls,

Just came across this programme over the weekend, and started W1D1 this morning...I didn't collapse, so I suppose thats a good start !! Really hope I can stick to it, as i've never been a great runner...

Few questions for ye :

I live in a city, so can't really avoid running on the road - does anyone know any good running shoes that might help me prevent my knees caving in ?

Are ye mainly morning or evening girls ? I went this morning, around 7am, and i think that'll be the best for me, as i don't usually get home from work till 730 or 8 in the evening, but I wonder will I be able to keep dragging myself out of my nice warm bed at that hour...

Welcome curlysu. I'm in the same boat as you never been a good runner either but willing to give this a try. I get up at 5:45 when I'm working so I do c25k on those evenings. Any day I'm off I'd exercise those mornings. I prefer to exercise in the morning but I don't fancy getting up at 5am to do it!!
I wear new balance runners they're specific for running and quite similar to asics. I would definitely recommend a good pair of runners they are worth the money especially if you're gonna be running on the road.
Best of luck with it

Girls I registered for the operation transformation 5k in the Phoenix park yesterday. Don't know what I getting myself into but thought it would give me motivation to keep going. Did anyone else register? I heard this morning that entry is now closed that they've reached the 5000 applicants already!!

Hi girls,

Welcome CurlySu, Good woman starting! I find it great! I went this morning at 6.30 to the gym to do my run! I would prefer to do it on the road as I find it more beneficial, but Im afraid of my life to go out at that time of the morning, Just dont know who is about! I live in a big enough town, but it doesnt start waking up until about 8ish, thats when the roads start to get busy!! I just have a pair of Nike runners for running and I find them dead on!! Prob should upgrade to a better pair as I plan to do alot of running between now and the summer!!

I started wk5 day1 today! found it ok!! Dreading wk5 day3, 20 mins non stop!!! But I done it before so I will do it again! Ive signed up for the local 10k in May so I hope to beat last years time of 59mins by at least 5 mins!!

Ginger how did you register? I wanted to but it kept tellin me that I couldnt until February?? Must have a look now!

Hope everyone else is well!!

Welcome CurlySu.

Just in regards to what runners to wear ... I've been through 3 pairs in the past year. I injured myself after the 1st lot as they weren't giving me the support I needed and then did more damage after the second.

You should make sure you go to a good sports / running shop and they'll actually watch you running on a treadmill, video it and then tell you what runners are the best. Or if youare own are suitable they'll tell you that. There's a few places in Cork doing it including Maher's Sports so you should be able to find somewhere easily enough - can't recommend it highly enough. The deal I had was that I'd to pay €25 to get it done but if I but runners that came off the price of them - which I did and they are brilliant.

Best of luck with the program. if I'd my way I'd prefer to go running before work but it's not feasible for me as I run outdoors and to get to work on time I need to be leaving the house pretty early as it is. I love running in daylight at the weekends now though :-)

You will be grand!! in 7/8 weeks time when you look back at when you started you will be glad that you kept going and perservered through!! Believe me I know! Ive been there and done it and this is my 3rd attempt at starting and going to the end! Im half way through this programme as well as doing a work out programme at the gym and no matter how sore I am I try and ignore it and go to the gym/for my run regardless, cuz when I start the pain eases and when Im finished I be delighted that I actually went and didnt listen to my head telling me to stay in bed for the extra hour before work!! Cuz in that extra hour Ive it all done!!!!

Hi all, just finished week 4! I was really pleased that I wasn't getting out of breath but my legs were like lead. I remember this last year too though - I couldn't understand how people could jog past me so freely when I felt like I was lifting these tree trunks to propel me forward. I know it won't last and it will get better though.

Having some problems with my hip which is the reason I had to stop running in September so I'm on my way out soon to get it seen to tonight. My hips are imbalances apparently - slightly annoying! I knew I had the appointment so went for a run anyway in case I can't for a while.

Curlysu, are you stretching well after your runs? Make sure you're doing a few different stretches and holding for 20-30 seconds each. It should help.

well done mismatch, 3lbs thats excellent. i'm going to weigh myself tomorrow and see if i've lost anything, so fingers crossed!!
curlydu, like the others have said make sure you stretch well after each run, it might not cut out all of the stiffness the next day but you shouldnt feel any soreness and walking and doing some exercise the next day will ease that too. i know its the last thing on you mind but you'll feel so much better afterwards :)
i did week 2 day 2 last night, i struggle slightly in the middle but i recover towards the end. its like i know i'm nearly finished so i get their as quickly as i can!!
i didnt do any jogging tonight but my brother is friends with one of the guys from operation transformation and they go walking every night. 6km walk. so i decided to join in with them tonight. feel great afterwards. nice to be outside in the fresh air (although i did get soaked in the end, my clothes are in a ball in the hall). tried running some of it but only did about 5 mins altogether in the end. its great to see everyone on such a health buzz

I was stretching, but i think i'll need to spend a little more time at it, i was only giving a few seconds on each mucsle group.
Fingers crossed for the weigh in tomorrow gingerwhinger !!

Hey girls, missed last might as I was to stiff from tuesday night to do anything. Wouldn't you think I'd take my own advice and stretch properly!! Still a little stiff today but not too bad. Will try and get a jog in this even.
Down 3.5lbs this week do I'm happy out. Although this diet has took its toll on me this morning. Really had to drag myself out of the bed (I'm normally a morning person) but I keep telling myself to think of that dress and it'll be all worth it in the end
