our kitchen/living/dining room is south facing and we just put in large fab glass sliding doors where the back wall should have been and where our dinging room table is we have almost ceiling to floor glass window - we used munster joinery black pvc windows and they are fab. The room is so so warm during the day with all the sun coming in. And i can tell you no way did it cost anywhere near 20k!!!!!!

I would hold onto the idea of the sunroom Surfjunkie, if I were you. A south facing BACK garden sounds fabulous to me. It will be private and you will have the sun shinning in there all day long.
My BIL has a south and west facing back garden and its fabulous. Its like a sun trap all day long and they have a small decked area with a railing for 2 small kids. Its really fabulous. The front of their house (to the north) is very dark by comparison.

The house we hope to move into soon has a smallish sunroom to the side of the house, and while it is to the south and the west, it is also at the side of the house and can be seen from the road, therefore less private and more noisey with cars flying past aswell.

In relation to cost, i suppose it depends on the size and finshes etc. Ours cost about €8K (roughly), I don't think a sunroom would cost €20K, especially when you would be building it at the same time as the rest of the house. Maybe it would be more expensive alright if you were adding a sunroom in a couple of years time if you know what i mean.
