help re painting front door black?

Postby Augustmum » Mon Mar 05, 2022 1:20 pm

Front door is black and needs to be re painted so am looking for advice on what steps to take and what paint to buy!

When we moved in the door was already back so not sure if I need to sand it, paint it black or gloss paint? I haven't a clue and don't want to make a balls of it! :-8

And how long should it take for me to do it? Weather seems quite nice out there today so looking to get stuck into it!

Thanks in advance!

If you want a really smooth finish you would probably need to sand it beforehand. I've to do mine again as it looks a bit dull. We used gloss the last time. It gave a lovely shiny finish.

Ah thanks for gettin back to me pixie, I think I will sand it a bit cos the paint seems to be chipping off iykwim. Any chance do you know whether I should buy black paint like under coat and then gloss? No problem if you don't! Thanks again!

I am sure it's really just a personal choice whether to use a primer underneath but as your door has previously been painted I wouldn't imagine it's necessary. A coat or two of the gloss should be plenty. I need to do mine again. Am hoping to get a porch so want it looking all nice just in case.

Best off stripping it down, sanding it, if you sand down too far to wood, use a good primer first before painting back on the black paint. Gloss is easier to clean afterwards.
Just make sure, not like me to paint on in the morning while you can be there for the day so no one touches off the door, that no little critters can get in, so NO midgies/flies from evening on get on it like what happened to me!

Good luck with it, I need to sand mine down and do it again, waiting for a "proposed" dry day to do it as our front door is teal green/blue in colour.
