Do I pay Councillors for help with Planning

Do I pay Councillors for help with Planning

Postby Newlyengaged2011 » Mon Mar 05, 2022 2:03 pm

Hello,
I have received help from a member of the county council, on my planning permission.

Do I pay them, or what should I do.

No I would say not!! They are paid by the tax payers already!

I would say that if you feel they made an effort to help you above and beyond that which you would expect of a public representative then a thank you card or gift would be a nice gesture - but nothing more. I would imagine 'payment' would not be appreciated anyway as it might look like they did something they shouldn't have - brown envelope and all that! :o0

Councillors helping with planning applications is usually considered 'brown envelope' territory.
How did s/he help?!

hi there,

i work for a local authority & its not the done thing to give them money - all you can promise them is your vote :o0

To be honest, there is alot of confusion as to what councillors actually do for people regarding planning etc. Before i started working in local government i was of the impression that a councillor or TD can actually change the minds of the local authority but in reality thats only the impression they give you so you'll vote for them. At best they'll be able to tell you something before you get the official letter from the Council & thats about it really.

Course the brown envelope culture may still be alive & well in some Councils but i think its nearly died out now.

That's why I'm interested to know what the councillor did for the OP!

We got help from our 2 local councillors when we were looking for our planning permission. My dad knows them well so we gave them a bottle of whiskey / brandy each and a thank you card.

I have a relation working in the council she thinks its hilarious people thinking councillors 'pulling' or 'helping' get you planning permission, if your going to get it you'll get it and no councillor can swing it your way.

she said they are off gloating and boasting that they 'got' it for them.

I dont like this kind of stuff - its why the country is like it is!

Give them NOTHING, you're paying enough!
