Help designing a kitchen island

Help designing a kitchen island

Postby excitedjuly12 » Wed Mar 07, 2022 1:31 pm

Bought a house and hoping to change around the kitchen - spray paint existing kitchen, build an island for centre of kitchen.
Supplier has asked me to come back to him with ideas for island - if any of you have one, can you give me tips/ideas or even a pic! :o0

Im thinking wine bottle holders
Built in bin
Some presses
Some drawers

It really depends on what you are missing from your kitchen as it stands.
I designed my island at same time as kitchen so I have just put in three big presses to hold all our everyday delph as the dishwasher is directly opposite the island, so I just have to turn around to put the dishes away. I leave all my other presses for food and cooking equipment etc. I find that big deep drawers are amazing, I have 4 in kitchen and use them for my good delph and for saucepans. I know others who use them for food and they are great, but I have parlour style presses for food.
Anyway the other thing to think about with island is how many people you want to sit at island? I wanted to comfortably get in 4 decent size stools, so I have an over hang on two sides of the island for stools to fit in underneath. I also got a plug put into island under the overhang at one side. You can pay a lot of money to get fancy plugs that pop up on your island, but we simply got electrician to leave wire coming up from floor and then when island put in, he came back and cut out a square on one side of island (up high so not seen) and he fitted a plain double plug box and it was so much cheaper.
I am not sure about a built in bin, I find them quite dirty anyway so not to my liking. What will you do with island? Will you use it to prepare all food? If, so then you might want little long think presses that pull out with wire baskets to hold oils, herbs etc. And then big drawers for your food. Or if you want it as a seating area where you sit with laptop and all the post etc gets thrown on (this is ours!!), then you might want a basket you can pull out to put your knick knacks in out of the way. A friend of mine swears by wicker baskets to put all fruit and veg in instead of fridge, so you might think of that.

wine bottle holders while they look nice can be a nightmare if you ever have kids, they climb on time and lift the wine bottles out ... accident waiting to happen, so we put ours over our american fridge freezer..

built in bin... great idea.. we have reccycling bin and a normal bin... they are a life saver.. these are the ones we have:

our island has a drawer at the top for cutlery and then 2 deep drawers for saucepans. Then i have side presses on either side. Agree with other poster, if you ever plan on having kids dont put in wine storage
