what is this smell??

came home from work on friday to the most horrible smell in the hall,found it was coming from the hotpress i took everything out and felt the pipes for damp and looked around for wet patches but nothing, all clear!
but the smell is still there,it smells like dirty stale water
anybody any idea what it could be???

Could it be a leak in the attic? You might be smelling it more strongly in the hotpress cos there'd be holes for the pipes to come down from the attic.

Open the attic door and you'll get the whiff fairly quickly if it is.

no i dont think its the attic,the attic door is in my room and i cant smell a thing in there,but in saying that i was in there alright last week and the christmas tree fell on the pipes,my pipes arent covered,i wonder did i damage one....sugar thats prob it,i'll give it a good look tomorrow,thanks for reply :wv

there is a chance that it could be mice in the hot press - or they might be in the attic and they go up and down the pipe from the attic to the hotpress. I had this is my house about 3 years ago. I got a smell a couple of times either in the hotpress, or when I was on the stairs - as they were in the boiler room (under the stairs).

I was a bit grossed out at first - so if you are too just take a deep breath.... it all ok if it is mice ... a few traps or even some poison in the attic will take care of them.

Not saying that it IS mice - only that it could be. I remember at the time I did not associate a smell with mice - but have since head from lots of people that its common.
I'd prefer a mouse or 2 to a leaking pipe anyway :wv

Sounds like stagnant water!(Water that's pooling & not moving) It's a horrible smell. Years ago in a building I worked in, we had a small sink in a press, & the smell of stagnant water was awful. Dead mice smell different, they just smell rotton, but stagnant water just smells like dish cloths left for WAY too long. Maybe ask your plumber what to do. THat smell can occur in a hot press, maybe something is preventing the water from circulating properly.

I am same as mommalou - we had dead mice in house underneath the floor - the smell was unbearable, I was convinced there was a leak somewhere in the bathroom
