Catholic Church Wedding Paperwork

Catholic Church Wedding Paperwork

Postby JustBecause » Wed Dec 01, 2021 1:00 pm

Hi ladies I thought this might be helpful :wv

I found the http://www.gettingmarried.ie site very good for the paperwork side and our priest spelled out what we needed to do, most of it needs to be done 6-3 months before the wedding. We made our appointment with the Registry office in Dublin 5 months in advance because we had a small windown when we could go. It seems to be worth ringing your local office early if you have a date in mind that would suit you.

Civil side:
Make appointment with the Registry Office, must be done minumum 3 months before the wedding. You can go to any Registry office that is convenient for your, you do not have to go to the one in your local area or where you are getting married.
For the appointment you will need:
* €150 - they take cash, credit card, laser card or cheque
* Names & DOBs of both witnesses
* Name of church
* Name of priest who will be marrying you
* Long birth cert
* Passport/ID - valid & in date
* PPS number
* A utiliy bill is each of your names (doesn't seem applicable in all counties)
They will give you the Marriage Registration Form that you will need to give to the priest on or before the wedding day
You will need to send off the signed form after the wedding.

For the details straight from the horse's mouth: http://www.groireland.ie/getting_married.htm#section1

Catholic Church side:
Book your church
Ask your priest (if you need to bring your own priest)
Premarriage course (can be done far in advance) required by most Priests but check with your priest as some require specific courses.
Get Baptisimal and Confirmation Certificates within 6 months of the wedding date (get from the church you were baspised/confirmed) FYI if you were bapstised & confirmed in the same parish both will on the same page.
Pre-nuptial Enquiry with your Parish Priest (bring the above certs and any letters of freedom you will need and your Pre-Marriage course certificate)
full list at http://www.gettingmarried.ie/pages/index.php?nd=18
Here is a sample Pre Nutpial Enquiry form

On our marriage website we've tried to outline as simply as possible the documents needed by Irish couples. At http://www.together.ie/Documents.html, under the general title Your Wedding Documents, you'll find current data on these four topics:
* Documents required by the Church
* Documents required by the State
* How Marriage is registered in Ireland
* The Regulations for Irish couples marrying Abroad

Many details regarding the wedding ceremony are explained on the page: http://www.together.ie/Ceremony.html. If there are other questions regarding the required formalities for a wedding, just let me know, via http://www.together.ie.

Hi all - quick question - my poor little head is confused with all the datelines!! :-8

We live in Sydney, and will be coming home late June to get a few loose ends tied up for the wedding. We were planning on getting the premarriage course, prenuptuals and registrar stuff all done then - our wedding date is 31 December 2021 - so it'll be just over 6 months out.

Will that be too early? Do things have set timelines?! :eek

Hi Olbol,
It is difficult planning a wedding from abroad (and I'm only in London!)

AFAIK you still need to do your pre-nuptial enquiry with your parish priest in Syndey. Maybe while you are home you can delegate the baptisimal & confirmation certs to some-one. They need to be dated withnin 6months of your wedding date.

You can definitely do your registry office stuff then. Maybe contact them now to make an appointment as you will only have a small window of opportunity to see them. (I booked my appointment 4 months in advance)
Best of luck

My Parish Priest has said he will accept an Affidavit instead of having to get letters of freedom (I have lived abroad in several different areas). He hasn't really given me any further information and isn't the most forthcoming with helpful advice. Would anyone have a draft Affidavit which they used and I could amend and use? Thanks

Hi Queen30, We're based in the uk and they had a form for us to have signed by a solicitor but I have a copy of the affidavit that some one else sent me before I discovered the form! I'll have a look for it and forward it to you.

AFFIDAVIT-form
Some were wondering how to go about getting an AFFIDAVIT template, online.
You might check http://www.together.ie/AFFIDAVIT.html for a typical format.
You'll need to sign it before a commissioner for oaths (most solicitors will do it) and then have it properly notarised (signed and sealed) by him/her.

I believe all of the normal paperwork requirements for a Catholic wedding are covered pretty clearly at http://www.together.ie/Documents.html. If you've any further queries on that area, feel free to contact me via our website http://www.together.ie.
