We've a lot of freedom with our ceremony and not getting married in Ireland, but I think we'll have 2 readings and a friend singing a song.

Hi MerryKitty,

There is no set rule for how many you "need" or "should" have.
When I discuss readings with my couples, I say that on average, most people would probably have 2 or 3 readings in a ceremony.
If you decide on quite short readings, then you might want to look at perhaps 3 or 4. If you had four short ones, I would often group these together so that (if there are 4 individual readers) then they pair up and two would read one after the other... then later in the ceremony the same again.
But as well as this, I always look at what the readings are about, from a content point - as you might have something for "in memory of.." then another about commitment & love, another about marriage and perhaps a funny light-hearted... so for this type of example, I would space them out through-out the ceremony, adding them in where appropriate to what is being said/done at that time in the order of service...
oh, a little hint, keep funny ones towards the end of the ceremony. And don't forget, you probably can't have anything which is in any way "religious" with the HSE civil ceremonies.

Overall - you should also take consideration to the length (of each reading & the ceremony in general), and how much time the readings are/can take up. If you are having an HSE civil ceremony, you might be restricted on how long you have them booked for (if you're in their offices, it might be shorter time allocation). So in this case, talk with the Registrar to find out exactly how long you have, so you can work out exactly how much talking time you can have (by reading your ceremony out-loud & timing yourself!)

*)
warmest regards,
Romy

Also consider if you have a longish reading, maybe you could have two people reading it? I had the hands poem (these are the hands) and had two people who we wanted to include in the ceremony read alternate lines :) Or the apache blessing works well when read by two difference people..
