Catholic wedding, no mass...

Catholic wedding, no mass...

Postby chocaholic84 » Tue Mar 27, 2022 10:11 am

Hey Guys,

We did our pre-marriage course the other week. The priest on the course said that we could be married in the catholic church and have no mass. You receive the sacrament of marriage, everything is the same, just no offertory procession and no communion. Just wondering if anyone has done this? My OH is not a practicing catholic so he's leaning towards this.

I'd love to know what you's think xx

I think this is lovely and can't understand why more people don't go down this route. The marriage ceremony without mass is actually quite long, so it def doesn't feel like you are just in and out.

It also suits groups where not everyone is a practicising Catholic, eg if either the bride or groom are not catholic.

The wedding I attended that did not have the mass just had a note in the invitation, I presume to let people know who might otherwise have thought that the wedding would also be their weekly mass as well, if they wanted to make other plans to attend mass.

As it is a separate sacrament, like a baptism, then I can't see why mass also has to be celebrated? I think it makes people focus more on what is actually happening in front of them.

HTH!

This sounds like an interesting idea because when i wrote out my order of service it was so long i kept thinking how are people going to feel sitting through all of this.

Would you still include prayers of the faithful reading etc

Hi, Shelly here. I'm new to using the forums so not sure I'm even using it right sorry. We are getting married the same way and I'm unsure of what it actually includes. Not sure what readings etc to use or how to go about doing a ceremony booklet. Any ideas?

I was at a Catholic wedding last year that didn't have a Mass - they had readings and prayers of the faithful as usual, it's just the 'second half' that's left out. It was really lovely and a nice length.

Yeah, everything else is included, the priest even gives a little sermon. We're going with this option. We can now play what ever music we want during the service, usually in the catholic mass it is only religious songs allowed.

We met with the priest who will be marrying us this morning. He mentioned to us that having the ceremony without mass is also an option to us. He said it completely depended on how we felt and which option we felt would be best for us. I had thought that this would mean it would be quite short but this doesn't seem to be the case. What do most people go for these days? How long do the two different ceremonies last?

As far as I know there will still be readings, prayers of the faithful, a gospel and serman. Theres just no communion. So wont really be that much shorter. I guess just for us we dont go to mass, neither do our friends, it makes sense for us to leave it out! :)

We would be pretty much the same as you chocaholic. I'd say we will probably go for no mass.
