Getting married in a different parish

Getting married in a different parish

Postby Marleey » Mon May 07, 2022 7:45 am

Hi

I just got engaged and we live abroad. I've heard people saying that it can be hard to get married in a different parish to your own. I know its probably an old fashioned thing to get married in your own parish but I would like to but my problem is I don't really like the priest. So I was wondering is it kinda rude to get married in a parish thats not that far from our own as our reception is only about 20mins away from my home? The other thing is we are trying to book everything from overseas so we wouldn't be able to attend mass if we picked a new parish, is this still a requirment?

Thanks

Congratulations!! We are getting married in a different parish which is actually only a few minutes away from my home parish! The priest of the church we are getting married in was happy for us to use the church but we have to provide our own priest because we are not in his parish. This is very common. Thankfully my fiances family know a priest so he has agreed to perform the ceremony. We will need to do the prenuptial questionnaire with our own parish priest and make sure we have all the necessary paperwork - letters of freedom, confirmation & baptismal cert etc.We also have to do a marriage preparation course. So there is a bit involved alright but it's not too bad!!

All I can say is that the priest can be very important.

Probably not as important as the venue UNLESS it's a terrible priest. My sister ended up going with a priest she wasn't particularly happy with because she was in love with the church. Unfortunately her priest was (or at least tried to be) really controlling. It ended up going well in the end, but the priest stressed her out so much in the run up that she nearly regretted choosing that church.
