Oh Lord, there's a thread going on over in O.T. at the moment and the grammar and spelling of one of the posters is making my eyes bleed. It's like a car crash though...I just can't look away. I have to keep going back in to see what else she's said O:|

Has anyone mentioned "alterior motive" yet? A colleague of mine says this all the time and it drives me bonkers.

Also, some of my younger cousins on facebook are just atrocious, it's like they never went to school!! "Dat wuz a grate day" was one of the last status updates. O:|

My boss is terrible for using "being" instead of "been", "tuff" instead of "tough" (that one drives me mental)

I read a lot of books when I was young, I used to always get them as presents so I think that's why I was so good at spelling. We did a spellathon in school to raise money for something and I was the only one to get 100/100! Yes it was about 15 years ago but I'm still claiming it!

Any child I know would laugh at you if you gave them a book as a present now!

Jesus, I don't think that's true at all, I always give books as presents and I haven't been laughed at yet.

I have a few stumbling blocks. I think I've got the hang of stationary/stationery now. You buy stationery in Easons. That car is stationary. Is that right??
The correct us of practise/practice still foils me everytime.

Yep! I always remember our German teacher (of all people!) teaching us that you buy stationEry in Easons - E with E!

"Practice" is the noun, "practise" is the verb.

I visited my GP at his practice in town.

I need to practise before my driving test.

Not in my experience either. The kids I teach love getting books. Most of them are obsessed.

There does seem to be an age where they go off stories for a while if it's not pushed, when they feel too old for someone reading to them, but too young to read good stories themselves, usually in 1st/2nd class. But once they find the right book and improve they're reading they're usually all hooked by 3rd/4th class again.

My pet hate is people using 'of' instead of 'have'. I should of beat him instead of I should have beat him!!!! Real one that sticks in my throat!!! I also comment on DH texts and will just send back a word that he has wrote incorrectly! :o)ll

Erm, really sorry but it should be "...should have beaten him" and "...written incorrectly"

A really pedantic one of mine is the misuse of ellipses. Its just three dots!

This isn't grammar but diction... I was listening to a news report and the well spoken newscaster proceeded to report on a "lurry" involved in a pile up. It's LORRY! I know they are different colloquialisms and ways of speaking in different areas but a newscaster should at the very least remember their THs and say lorry correctly.
