grammar rant

On the misprinted signs end of things: I've seen a van around that claims it's driver does fitted batrooms. Also there's a sign on the way into town just over the Annesly Bridge that advertises the clearing of 'greese traps'.

This one has always confused me. I know the possessive apostrophe applies in the case of 'Sharon's computer'. When I think of the 'it' version- as in "it's driver" I would put the apostrophe in there because if I used van, as in "the van's driver" - is that not the way to do it? I know this is really badly written but it's hard to talk about apostrophes without pointing to them!

ETA- Just found a website on the possessive apostrophe, I get it now! In the words of Ralph Wiggum: I'm learnding!

I've lost count of the number of grammatical turds that people empty out of their mouths and from their pens and keyboards which make me want to claw and yowl. One colleague who claimed to have worked as a teacher (!) constantly says "I seen this", "I done that", "them things" (pronouned "dem tings") and yet I doubt if she ever considered that her grammar prevented her from being retained as a teacher. Oh, yeah, school politics kept her out of a job, not her own mouth. Umm, I don't wish to sound like a complete b1tch but I always thought that a teacher with bad grammar would be like a doctor who had poor or no hand hygiene - not someone you could take seriously or whose advice you would be comfortable taking.

My other pet hate is getting emails written as though they are d@mned text messages. One colleague I have does that all of the time and I know that she is not so overwhelmed with work that she couldn't stretch to using actual words. In fact I said how much I dislike such messages today and Bambi didn't even register. Short of saying "that includes your messages, dim tits" (to paraphrase Charlie Harper's "numb nuts"), I'm not sure how obvious I could have made it for her. O:| Oh well, she's probably lkn 4wd 2 slbr8g St Paddys day. Arrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhh!

I can forgive text messages or tweets in text speak. I still loathe it, but the character limitations mean I'll accept (not except) it. Apart from those two occasions, there is no excuse for it. I've hidden people from my news feed on Facebook because their use of text speak drives me nuts.

Luckily my husband is a grammar nazi too, he's been known to reply to my emails giving out if I've made an error due to typing too quickly. Annoying, but my ex used to spell incorrectly or use incorrect grammar sometimes and when he'd send me loving text messages all I would see would be the errors and that was far more annoying!

There's a man I work with who always says "we was". I want to shake him and shout at him until he stops doing it. >:o)

My SIL is a great one for "killed him dead" well you hardly killed him alive did you?

There's a sports reporter on 2fm who can't pronounce his "th's" and it drives me demented.

I've also just spotted a thread looking for a "Chocolate Foundation" O:| O:| O:|

I saw (not seen)a sign up on a building site once which read 'DRIVE SLOW'

can' believe no one has mentioned one (that i've actually ranted about before!): do be/does be.

as in "i do be watching..." or "he does be saying..." WTF is that supposed to mean?!!!! drives me MENTAL!

and for the record i'd from dublin and my mum has always been mum. am defo irish not english but always thought of mammy and mam as either something people from the country say (including my mum called her mother mammy) or something from a roddy doyle book.

Altar vs alter
Alter is what you might do with your dress if it doesn't fit properly... Altar is that 'thing' that is significant if you are having a wedding in church. And breathe................

It's a treadmill because you tread on it, genius.

More people seem to spell this the wrong way than the right way, why they have such a mental block about that particular word I have no idea.

Ah, I feel better already :o0
