Just hoping i can get a bit of advice from all ye newly weds.Getting married in a couple of months & tryin to decide on whether to go all out on fancy meal which is 90 a head or go for standard at 55 a head so just wondering how much on average do a couple give now with the year thats in it??We can totally afford it at 50 a head ourselves without any gifts(so not treating them like cash cows or anything)but if it turns out that people give very genorous gifts i dont want to regret not giving them a nicer meal!!
Thanks a million in advance!!

hi newmrs, congrats on your wedding coming up its so much fun organisin everything i think the average is round 150 alright dependin on who the guest is, like some relations/ close friends will give more!! can you ask the hotel for sample of both menus ?? there might not be that much of a difference between them quality wise ????

The recession appears to have hit us; alot of couples gave us 100.

hiya there
I would go for the budget special you mentioned, we received alot of cash gifts, but its not like a few years ago at all. The norm was 100 per couple, and close friends and family gave that little bit more, have to say though the most we got from one couple was 250. We are gona return alot of the pic frames and glasses to shops in return for some thing that we wil use ourselves and local shop said that they will except these frames for credit note so we are lucky that way. Recession definightly here, dont waste your money on the big fancy meal, im sure that the cheaper meal is just as nice... this is what we did recently and everyone said the food was great.

God its amazing really when you think of it - we always gave 150/200 at a wedding or 300 for family member...then a friend of mine got married and said our present of 200 was very generous as most had given 100 and some had given none...i was shocked that peole would go to a wedding and not give a gift...also before the euro we'd give 100 pounds so we just up'd it to 150 when it came to euro equivalent etc

Our average was 200 per couple with a lot of 150s as well. A lot of singles gave 100 some gave 70. We got very few non-cash gifts.

I do think it varies so maybe have a discreet word with people in your own circles to see what's the norm.

Edited to say our wedding was May 2009

For us last year (before the recession hit) it was between 150 and 200 on average per couple, though we did have a few under and over those amounts!

I got married last year so no recession but even still, I was surprised at the gifts. Some gave 75 per couple some gave 200 and we got a good few vouchers and gifts as well so they are no good when trying to pay back a loan afterwards or whatever way you would do it.

With the way things are I would look into the cheaper menu and see what is on offer with that, maybe you could make a couple of changes that would bring you in between the 55 and the 90 per head. TBH I think 90 per head is daylight robbery and I wouldn't pay it on principle but that's just my opinion.

Average for our wedding at the end of may was 200 but we got lots of 250's too and only one or two 150 and nothing less than that. Surprisingly the 150's came from people who should have ad money e.g. doctors and the most from people will who in theory should have had less.

we were last summer, before the recession, and got mostly 200 per couple, but also found some single people giving us 150/200. A few people (siblings and best friends) gave between 300-1000! If there is a huge difference inthe quality of the 2 meals i would go for the better one (there;s nothing worse than bad wedding food to get people talking!). Or - would the Hotel meet you in the middle and design a meal for 70 euro a head?

First reply in Newly Weds! Married Fri and our cash gifts ranged from 75 to 300 and cheques from 50 to 750. People were extremely generous to us given the times we're in.

Average per couple for us was around 150 but we did some 100's too.

I think a lot of people are buying gifts now as they are cheaper than giving money!
