|
|
TAKEN FROM RTE NEWS.IE
Over 10,000 electricians are staging a strike in a dispute over pay.
Today's action follows the collapse of talks at the Labour Relations Commission over the weekend.
Pickets have been placed on hundreds of construction sites, including some high-profile projects such as Dublin's new airport terminal and the Lansdowne Road stand.
However, electricity supply is not being affected.
The country's largest trade union, SIPTU, has backed the strikers.
Electricians say they are looking for an 11% increase due to them since the peak of the boom.
Employers say their claim is unrealistic in the current economic climate and want a 10% pay cut.
In an already turbulent economy, this strike will see increasing tensions in employer-union relations.
However, SIPTU's Jack O'Connor said in a statement that the electricians must be supported by workers, because the employers' objective of cutting pay reflected the aim of the wealthy to protect their assets and privileged positions.
a lot of people on the radio this morning were of the opinion that those on strike should cop on and be grateful they have a job in this current economic situation-whats ur opinion?

Hmm...initially I thought they sould be grateful to have work, but when I read further over the weekend, this is a raise they've been promised since the 'boom'... I just think striking at the moment won't win them much public support, what with people losing their jobs every day. It's a tough one though. _________________

on one hand the contractors increased the prices to clients in 2007 but this was never passed to contractors as promised so i can understand the fustration there. not being given a rise when you are suppossed to and now being asked to cut the salary. tbh if i was in their boots i would feel a little resentful. i also think that the recession for most employers is an easy excuse to not offer pay rises. before any one attacks me i mysef was made redundant so i know what it feels like to loose a job. luckily i was able to find another job. its only part time and i am feeling the pinch of a reduced salary. i just think that issue isn't as black and white as some people are making out. _________________

Agree! I dont know anyone personally involved in the strike but they were promised a wage increase and they should have gotten it!!
But their timing is a little off ......
I also understand that public opinion will definitely not be behind them and they will be slated for striking when the country is in turmoil and with so many people out of work.
I also think as OP said that some employers do jump on the recession band wagon and cut peoples wages / hours etc when there is no need to do so.
I cannot see the electricians striking unless they really felt this is the very last option that they had! They would have expected the public outcry and the lack of sympathy from the normal joe on the street so they really must have been pushed into this action.

DH is one of the strikers this morning on the Corrib, he for one doesnt want to be there as do most of the men I spoke to over the weekend but as someone else pointed out its not that black and white, this all started over 2 years ago when the country was still booming and all the other trades got their 2007 raise and the electricians were still on the 2005-2006 rate, this was brought to the high court and won but still not given, then a few months ago the employers union brought out that not only were they not going to give them the rise they are due for 3 years but they wanted a 10% pay cut, cut on travel time and country money, 30% pay cut on apprentices rates and for all electricians to supply all their own power/battery tools so that means electricians wouldn be down 21% on all tradesmen without everything else I named above,
My husband doesnt want a rise, couldnt give a flying fcuk if he didnt get it but he doesnt want a pay cut on an already 2006 rate and basically what they are saying is if they let the employers away with this now what will it be next??? and what other tradesmen are going to suffer from employers unions next???? Now I dont know how anyone can find this unfair.
All electricians want this sorry mess over and done with but they dont want to be treated like sh1te either, We wont have the money to pay our mortage next month if this keeps up as im already on a 3 day week but Im willing to support them _________________ "he loves me just the way I am"

I'm just shocked that there are still 10,000 electricians in employment at the minute

My DH has been out of work since November. He started back there about a month ago on a site in Dublin which is brilliant but he went into work this morning and was told to go home because of this strike.
We are really really struggling to catch up with all the debts that were built up whilst he was out of work and now through no fault of his own he is down a days pay (he gets paid by the hour).
He is not an electrician and is understandably a little annoyed that this is going on at this current time.

I'm sorry I have to say I am disgusted by the whole thing, already electricians are supposed to start from 39,000 a year after finishing their apprenticeship (2005) (http://www.epace.ie/payrate.htm) and now they want a pay rise... (I work in computers, been working for 6 years and don't get close to that kind of money, and if I had to take a pay cut then so be it, I am happy just to have a job at this stage)
My DH is an electrical contractor and as a result of the expected wages that electricians are supposed to get he stopped having staff over 3 years ago because it was just too expensive to retain them.
The question to ask is if they want to still keep their jobs because they way they are going they are going to bring this country further into recession with their actions and globally we are looking even more rediculous if that were even possible.

What gets me is why did they not go on strike in 2007 if it was owed ??
Me thinks they were too busy raking it in and doing nixers to be bothered striking. They would have lost a fortune going on strike for a week in 2007!!!
Its crazy that other companies like Guiness & Cadburys were putting people on protective notice over something that was not in their control.
Shame on the union involved. They need to get real (IMO)
There are too many people unemployed who would love a job, any job!

My husband is in the same situation. 2 days of no work because 'you can't cross the picket' crap. They should think about all the other workers out there who are losing out on money because of their actions.
