Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
fair play
why should tax payers pay grants when the family aren't payin their taxes. and the argument students shouldn't be made 'suffer' cause their parents it's their parents earnings that entitle to it €100 for €2k plus grant isn't bad IMO
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
My parents had to be tax compliant when applying for my grant, which thankfully I was entitled to. Their income was assessed even though they didn't financially support me once I finished secondary school.
I don't know why it should be any different now.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
I agree, if parents won't contribute then why shoukd everyone else have to pay. Where do people think the money comes from? They can't just take and give nothing nothing in return
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
I dont have a problem with it. Grants are assessed on the parents income anyway so it makes sense that they should be tax compliant.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
What happens in a case then where you have drug-addicted parents, who cant get up off the floor to put food on the table, never mind financially contribute to anything, but have a bright, intelligent child who got a place in uni to undertake a degree in medicine? Should he or she suffer?
Investing into education is never a waste, or a drain on the system. Big difference between the taxpayer funding social welfare scroungers (not legitimate claimers) and investing into education.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
Bully Boy Tactics is what this is. So if parents can't afford to pay the mortgage or the household tax and are looking for a grant for their Child to go to College the student has to suffer? Ridiculous.
We have just paid € 1.5 billion to unsecured bondholders in AIB today and you wonder as some have said sure "Where else is the money going to come from?" WE THE TAXPAYERS ARE PAYING FOR THIS! Well it can come from other "Big Boys" pockets and not mine, Thank You. Big Phil refuses to pay his in his Holiday Home. I have had enough and will not be paying this. It's about time we all stood up and made them change their direction. Stop taking from and bullying the less well off and grow a pair and start taking more from the Rich. The consultant saga for example. O'Reilly wanted to stop Home Help and fleece the special needs as he had to find the money BUT he hasn't the Balls to take from these who are earning 250k+ ( mosy at €500K) and some even 1million a year! ![]() Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
these kids are probably in council housing which is expect anyways
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
Good point - there's a can't pay vs won't pay argument here too. A lot of people who couldn't pay would have been exempt (if you are entitled to MIS, you are exempt), I would expect this to be taken into account i.e. submit proof of payment or proof of exemption.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
The 100e is a charge, not a tax. Will they want people to show proof they have paid their car tax also before giving the grant? Its totally unfair hitting young people like that when they have no control over what their parents can / will pay. Thankfully, the Dept. of education said they cannot withold the grants on this basis and legal experts say Councils cant just decide on a random basis criteria for the grants. Although, according to the news this morning, more councils are considering using proof of payment of this charge before giving out disability grants - this really is a new low for Ireland.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
Not sure of your point?
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
Sorry, I get what you mean.
Not always the case though, what if they lived in private residential estates? My point being, why should a student suffer for their parents' actions (sometimes through no fault of the parents themselves, due to social problems). We would also subsequently suffer, as we would potentially be preventing turning out a potentially good doctor, whch would be in society's interest.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
I have no problem with this, for those who won't pay, but it isn't fair to penalise the children of those who can't pay.
Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
Isn't there is option of paying in installments? I know that times are tough but I find it hard to believe that people can't find 100/euro over the course of a year. With regards to this particular topic, I don't really like what they are doing purely because it feels like blackmail but if people won't pay why should they be in receipt of grants from the Government? Re: Surely this won't be allowed...
I agree with you. But maybe some people can't afford even that €100 for this year. I find it hard to understand that over a 12 month period someone couldn't pay it, but maybe there are people in that situation and in dire financial straits. Although. I'd imagine alot of people are justmamking some sort of stand and just saying they can't afford €100 and just don't even want to consider the instalment method. It is sort of blackmail I guess... But if people expect/want help in the form of grants or other social welfare payments they should participate in society and pay, like all the other cictizens who are eligible. Not just opt out, because it suits them.
