Wedding traditions around the world: Uganda

Jessica's Simpson's new show, The Price of Beauty travelled to Uganda recently, where they found out that in Uganda, fat is beautiful.

Our recent B Magazine survey showed that 82% of Wollies are currently on a diet and 70% want to lose between 6lbs and two stone. The bride's preoccupation with dieting before her wedding has become so commonplace in our western culture it is regarded as normal behaviour.

Jessica's Simpson's new show, “The Price of Beauty” travelled to Uganda recently, where they found out that in Uganda, fat is beautiful. Talk about culture shock! Jessica and her two best friends found a remote tribe where being curvy is considered beautiful. Men look for curvy women because it makes them look wealthier and most women wear additional skirts under their dress to make them look bigger. A well fed wife and cow is a sign that you are a wealthy man and is a compliment to the household.

The brides-to-be go into “fattening huts” two months before their wedding in order to gain weight. They spend all day in the hut and drink a full fat milk jug every three hours, totalling around 5,000 calories a day. This bride-to-be which was interviewed by Jessica Simpson gained over 80lbs in two months on this reverse diet! As Jessica mentions in the show, these brides-to-be also have to be just as disciplined in order to gain the weight, as Western women have to be to lose weight.
