baked 1st carrot cake - took ages to bake!

Hi
I'll start off by saying I'm a complete novice in baking. I followed Rachel Allen's recipe to the T. I've an old gas cooker and recipe said to bake it for 1hr to 1.15hrs at gas mark 2. Needless to say I'm still waiting in the kitchen for it it finish - a whole 2.5hrs later. Its ridiculous.
anyone do this cake in a gas oven? If so, what gas mark did you bake at and for how long?

I've to attempt this next week for a party. Thank god I didn't leave it to try it for first time next week, that would have just been a disaster.

Logical, I think it's just that receipe! I bake loads and I love that recipe, BUT, I have a fan oven and usually I have to reduce the temperature by 10-20degrees and would bake until the shortest time 1hr-1hr 15 mins, I'd always bake until the 1 hour mark. But with this reciepe I have to leave temp at the 150 degrees and bake it for 1.30mins, it's totally out. I would go with gas mark 3 (which is about 170 degrees) and check it after the 1 hr 15mins. Its a delicious cake though :innocent:
